I’m honored to have my poem, entitled ‘Training Wheels,” included in ‘Kentucky’s Best Emerging Poets 2019: An Anthology.’ While I’m more of a “re-emerging poet” because of a long enforced sabbatical due to ill health, it feels even more amazing to have my work included in this anthology. I rarely ever submit anymore and was pleasantly surprised by this. It may encourage me to submit more often.

The anthology includes some lovely poems by some very promising poets. The anthology is built around several themes, including love and heartbreak, family and friendship, and the inherent beauty of nature. I’m happy to have my work placed aside both newly emerging voices as the name implies, as well as other more established writers, such as Amanda G. Crum, Delaney L. Holt, Bobbi Dawn Rightmyer, Tatiana Ryckman and Mervyn R. Seivwright, among others.

“Training Wheels,” which makes its debut appearance in the anthology, will be included in my series in progress titled ‘Elemental.’ It could reasonably be placed somewhere within my chronic illness poems, as well. It includes themes of love, family dysfunction and chronic illness. Here’s a small excerpt:

"In your love for me, a deep abiding
love you're convinced is our destiny."
from 'Training Wheels,' Michelle Beltano Curtis

Just to give you a taste of what this anthology holds, here is a sampling of a few of my favorite lines:

"Can't you hear the raven's aria
slipping from her lips, pursed like bruised
cherries,"
from "Haunted House" by Cassidy Laney
"Sunbeams find a place to rest
on boughs weighed down with bees
A honeysuckle perfume snakes around
the cattails and the willow trees"
from "Dog Days" by Mikaila Smith
" or two jays,
trapped
in a glassy, clear cage
The same way I'm trapped
by all your ways"
from "Swimming" by Taryn Syck

I could go on for some time with quotes, but if you want to read more, I recommend you pick up the book. It’s available on Z Publishing’s website by following this link:
